Mental Health at Work: The Conversation We Can No Longer Avoid
- by Allan Lee, COO CSM Academy International
In today’s workplace, performance is high — but so is exhaustion. Sounds familiar, well that’s the truth in my point of view. Burnout, anxiety, emotional fatigue, and silent disengagement have become common experiences for employees across industries. Yet most of this struggle remains invisible. Employees today will not admit that they are overwhelmed, instead they say "I’m fine." (I am guilty as charged too)
We must all agree that Mental health is no longer a personal issue. It is a leadership issue. It is a business issue. It is a sustainability issue.
Organisations that ignore employees’ mental wellness face higher turnover, lower productivity, rising healthcare costs, and weakened workplace culture. Those that address it build stronger, more resilient teams and healthier leadership pipelines.
A mentally healthy workplace is not one without pressure — it is one with support, safety, and sustainable expectations. Having worked for employers from “different dimensions”, and based on my experience, please allow me to share how a mental-healthy workplace should be.
First, the workplace must have leaders who listen. Secondly, workload boundaries must be distinctively clear. Thirdly, there must be psychological safety to allow employees to speak up without fear. Lastly, the employees must have access to real support. The above will create a culture that values people, not just output.
Mental health is not a perk. It is not a benefit. It is infrastructure. The most successful companies of the future will not be defined by how much pressure their people can endure — but by how well they care for the people behind the performance.
